Delete the Center Letter(s)

EXAMPLE: Hollow, feverish, elderly (4) [1]

NOTE: Usually, these indicators are used to clue the deletion of the middle letter of a word with an odd number of letters. I have also seen them used to indicate the deletion of the middle two letters of a word with an even number of letters, and even occasionally to clue using only the first and last letters of a word (which is also covered by the indicators on the “Use the Outer Letters” list).
