WHEN TO USE “FOR EXAMPLE”
As I noted elsewhere in the site, you can clue the specific with the general: you can use the word “car” to clue the word “sedan” (or limo, cab, taxi, etc.).
But you cannot clue the general with the specific: you cannot use the word “sedan” to clue the word “car.”
However, you can use the phrase “sedan, for example” to clue the word “car.”
NOTE: There are some clever ways to hide your “for example” indicator:
